Winning Mindset Mastery with April Shprintz – Episode 263
Hearing someone tell you that you can’t do something can be discouraging, especially when it’s coming from someone you care about, admire, or trust.
In this episode, April Shprintz shares three reasons people may discourage you from pursuing something that’s important to you.
Sometimes it’s because they can’t imagine doing it themselves. Other times, your willingness to take a risk makes them uncomfortable with the choices they’ve made in their own lives. And sometimes, they’re simply looking at the situation through their own fear of failure.
April explains the difference between people who are motivated by avoiding pain and those who are motivated by pursuing what they want. She also shares why she’s careful about whose advice she takes and what she looks for in the people she chooses to listen to.

3 Reasons People Tell You That You Can’t Do Something
What Their Doubts May Reveal About Them, Not You
Hi there! I am so glad you’re here. We have got to talk about this today.
How many times have you really wanted to do something that felt really important and really special to you, and you bring it to someone that you really care about or you admire or is just really close to you?
They’re in your life, and they’re like, “Oh yeah, you can’t do that.”
What?! Buzzkill!
Okay, let me tell you the three reasons that people in your life are telling you you can’t do something you really want to do.
1. They Can’t Do It
The first one is they can’t do it.
I do not ever see really successful people telling other people that they can’t do something. It just doesn’t happen.
They not only believe that they can do it, they believe that they wouldn’t want to do it if it wasn’t possible for them.
So if you’re hearing from your immediate audience of people in your life that you can’t do something, chances are they can’t do it. And that’s why they’re saying that to you.
2. Your Success Makes Them Question Their Own Choices
The second one is, and this kind of goes with the first one, but if they think that you doing this thing that you want to do, this being special, going outside the box, taking a risk, taking a chance, if they think that’s going to make them look bad if you do it, they’re not going to want you to.
And what I mean by “look bad” is question who they are. Question why they aren’t going outside of the box. Question why they aren’t pursuing their dreams.
A lot of times people get very uncomfortable when we change our lives because they think that means something about them.

3. They’re Motivated by Fear Instead of Possibility
The third one happens all the time. There are people who just live from a place of fear.
Their entire life is stick motivated, meaning, “I’m trying to avoid pain,” instead of carrot motivated.
And most people who want to do big things are carrot motivated. They want to chase the prize.
Well, people who are stick motivated are just trying to cover their ass.
“I don’t want to lose. I don’t want to embarrass myself. I don’t want to make a mistake I can’t come back from.”
Look, those are limiting beliefs.
None of those things are forever. They are all ways to learn and eventually succeed. But there are just folks that do not see them that way.
But don’t let them stop you from doing the thing that you want to do most.

My personal thought on this is I don’t ask people for advice about something I want to do unless they’ve done it.
And if they’ve done it, I still want to be asking advice of people that I would trade lives with.
Because if I wouldn’t trade lives with you, why would I do what you say?

Because they’re not going to know what the truth is for you.
Only you are going to know that.
Here’s to your success!
