A Savvy Business Reframe From Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift’s Business Reframe In 2019
I am so glad you’re here. You’d probably have to be on another planet not to have heard the name Taylor Swift. Whether you’re a fan or not, she has got some amazing business acumen-type lessons and actually some really amazing mindset lessons as you watch her as a businesswoman in the world. One of the things I noticed this year that I thought was so incredible is that people were talking about how she went from $1.6 billion in net worth to $2.1 billion in 2025. If you ask me, you can trace that back to a mindset shift that she made in 2019.
I want to tell you about it because this could apply to each and every one of us. It may not result in hundreds of millions of dollars, but it will result in a big difference in your life. If you’re not familiar with the situation, back in 2019, Taylor had the masters, which is really control of all the work that she had created while she was at Big Machine Records. I think that’s maybe 5 or 6 albums, something like that. Those were sold to someone else. While that didn’t impact her financially, it basically meant that this thing that you created, someone else owns it. It’s not yours. You can’t have it.
That really bothered her. Now this is something that a lot of people could take and use as a reason to become bitter, to become angry, to say the world is against them, those sorts of things. What’s interesting is that she was absolutely angry and felt like it was very wrong that they did this. She took a piece of advice from Kelly Clarkson and recorded all of her work again. Here’s what’s impressive. She put in all that extra effort, but what it did was change her focus.
Instead of focusing on what was happening to her, she focused on what she could control. She reframed it. Not only did she rerecord the work, and now she’s more talented, she has more practice, her voice is better, she was able to create something that was even better than she’d created before, and she did special things for her fans to make them want to buy this new work.
As soon as you figure out what you should change in your life, you become the person who controls and creates your own reality. Share on XThe part that maybe most people weren’t really thinking about, they’re like, “She got money from the new albums.” She absolutely did, and those were probably sales that she wouldn’t have had otherwise. She wasn’t losing money because they had her master’s, but she got herself out in front of people even more.
She showed people what it looks like to be a hero instead of a victim. Instead of blaming them for what they were doing to her, she took action in a way that not only benefited her, but it benefited all of her fans. She gave them the opportunity to come along with her on a type of hero’s journey, to get on board with her, to see how she was fighting for herself and standing up for herself.
Here’s what’s amazing, because she started doing that, she was even more prevalent in culture and more prevalent in the music scene. That helped her generate even more fans in a different generation. She was able to grow her empire hugely and take control of her own narrative with a simple reframe.
How Can You Do Your Own Mindset Shift
What I want to ask you this week is this, what is it that is right now in this moment, something you think that’s happening to you, that if you just change the way you look at it or change the way you were responding to it, could end up being something that was happening for you in a really big way? As soon as you figure that out, you become the person who controls and creates your own reality. This is the biggest benefit that mindset gives you. Here’s to your success.
