Business Mindset Gold From Dolly Parton
Recognizing Opportunities Everywhere
I am so glad you’re here. My heart is a little bit broken today because we lost such a legend named Dolly Parton. I know by the time this airs, it will be weeks since she’s been gone. I tell you weeks aren’t long enough to pay tribute to a woman who brought so much light to the world and was such an angel. I wanted to share a business story from Dolly because you know I love her. I’ve done episodes about her before, but this business story that I have from her is incredible. It helps you see that opportunities are everywhere. They are right around the corner. There is no such thing as something that is once in a lifetime. There isn’t.
Protecting Your Long-Term Assets
If you’re familiar with Dolly, you probably know that she wrote the song, I Will Always Love You, back in 1974. She wrote it for Porter Wagner, when she was getting her own career up and running and she wasn’t going to be in that partnership anymore. She was thrilled to find out a few years later that Elvis Presley wanted to record the song. He was an idol of hers. She was so excited about it. The night before he was set to do it, his manager, who you may know, as the Colonel, called Dolly and said, “Any songwriter that wanted Elvis to sing their song had to give 50% of the publishing rights.”

Now, I don’t know what you know about music, but writing songs is where the money really is. Those publishing rights are like annuities. They can continue to pay every time someone records or plays the song as long as you own that music. Dolly was devastated but she refused because she said, “Those publishing rights are how I’m going to support me and my family for the rest of our lives.” She cried that entire night, but she and her gut thought that was the right thing to do.
Saying no to a high-profile deal takes courage, but trusting your gut preserves your true wealth. Share on XEliminating The Fear Of Missing Out
This is the lesson. There is no Will once in a lifetime opportunity. There is no, “This is the best thing that’ll ever happen,” to you. You stay true to yourself. You understand that whatever opportunity you get offered, you take it if it feels good. You don’t if it doesn’t and you understand the opportunities are like buses. Another one is going to come in about twenty minutes. I know it doesn’t feel like that. I know it feels scary and it feels like you have to and there’s so much pressure. The universe doesn’t work like that.
Holding onto her song rights paid Dolly ten million dollars when Whitney Houston recorded it years later. Share on XReaping The Rewards Of Self-Belief
We get opportunity after opportunity. We have to believe that they’re coming so we’re looking for them and we don’t miss them. I’m sure Dolly had tons of opportunities after this before the opportunity that she had because she made this choice. Remember, in the 1990s, when Whitney Houston recorded, I Will Always Love You, Dolly made $10 million from those publishing rights. That was at one count. She may have made more than that over the entire time span of that song being played and used. $10 million because she said no to give up those rights.

Let’s be honest. I’m not saying anything bad about Elvis, the King of rock and roll, understands. Can you imagine anyone doing a better job with that song than Whitney ended up doing? I can’t. Dolly making that choice, believing in herself, believing in her gut that she should do the thing that she was committed to doing from a business perspective for her and her family made an incredible difference. Not just to her. Not just a Whitney, but to all the people in a local community from where she was from. She completely rebuilt it by investing that money and called it the town that Whitney built.
Achieving Success Through Authentic Leadership
This woman was an incredible business person, but she was also an incredible example of how you can never lose out by believing in yourself, following your own intuition and being true to who you are. I could talk to you all day long about lessons I’ve learned from Dolly, but this one I want to leave with you. I want you to understand that opportunities are endless. You just have to look for them. Following your own gut and your own intuition is never going to lead you the wrong way. I promise you that. Here’s to your success.
