Unlock The Hidden Code To Success And Happiness
If you have been tuning in to the show for any amount of time or following me on social media, you know I quote Zig Ziglar. He was one of the best inspirational speakers of all time. He is a fantastic salesperson and a great gentleman. The biggest reason he was good at sales is that he truly believed, and this is my favorite quote of his, “You can have everything in the world you want if you help enough people get what they want.”
In a very similar way, when you are looking for happiness, success, or something in your life, I want you to remember this, and this quote is for me, “You can have everything you want if you stop expecting to have it a certain way.” I want you to think about that for a moment because it sounds simple. It was like, “I don’t want to have it a certain way, but many times, we do.”
I will use myself as an example. Growing up, I wanted to be a television news anchor. I wanted to be like Barbara Walters on the show she was on doing the things that she did. I pursued that for much of my life and modeled everything I did as a kid around it and where I wanted to go to college. However, when I got closer to that opportunity, it ended up being that I could be a broadcaster and anchor a long-form news program. It would end up airing to a much larger audience than I had ever expected but I did it in a completely different way. I did it through the military.
If you had told me I could have it but I couldn’t have it the way I wanted it when I was younger, 1) I probably wouldn’t have believed you, but 2) I would have had a problem with it because there is a limiting factor for each and every one of us, which is we only know the ways we know. We can only see the opportunities that we can imagine.
We can only see the opportunities that we can imagine. Share on XIf you are a great mathematician, you do some quantitative analysis or you are someone who loves to talk about all of the infinite possibilities, different permutations, and ways that things can happen. You are in a better place because you know that there are all these possibilities that you can’t even imagine at this moment.
If you are not one of those folks, I want you to take this a little bit on faith but also think back in your life to different things you have wanted and how at some point they did show up but maybe they didn’t look exactly like what you thought they would look like. By releasing that expectation of them only being able to happen this one certain way, you can find happiness much more quickly and easily. That goes for success as well.
When I think about my early career in corporate, I wanted to be a CEO and be in charge. I thought that I would need to do that in a more traditional way. The longer I was in the corporate environment, the more I realized that it was going to take forever. You combined my need to accelerate things, make them go more quickly, my desire to help people, and climbing the corporate ladder to eventually one day be CEO no longer worked for me.
While I thought I was letting go of that dream, what I ended up doing was allowing it to come in a different way. Since starting my company, I have stepped in and been the CEO of several different companies to help accelerate them and turn around to be able to be sold, grow at a great speed, and then still be the CEO of my company. All are looking much different than what I would have told you I wanted years ago, but it is making me even happier.
I will give you another example. When I think of happier, it reminds me of a client of mine who had wanted to create an impactful business. He wanted to touch hundreds of thousands to millions of lives and worked for years on building this. That company failed. They closed it because it wasn’t doing what they thought it would do.
Later on, when we began to work together, he had given up the dream of having that big, huge company that is impacting many people. What was interesting is he now has that company that is impacting the people the way that he wanted, but it is on a much smaller scale. He didn’t need all the employees and distribution. It is in a different industry. It looks different than what he thought it would.
The reason I share this with you is in all of those stories, the story of mine, and the story of my client, there was a lot of angst, fear, and upset that they weren’t going to get the thing that they wanted. All we required was that reframe. If we stop expecting it to look exactly the way we think it will look, we will be able to achieve it, have it, and enjoy it much more quickly.
Think about friends who wanted to have children and ended up adopting. Think about someone you know who wanted to be in a relationship with and marry someone who had never been married before but married someone who was their second spouse and happier than they could ever imagine. The one thing we’ve got to let go of is our expectation of exactly what it will look like. We don’t have to let go of happiness and success. Try this reframe out and let me know how it works for you. Here’s to your success.
