These 3 Questions Will Get You More Money, Fast!
Back in the late ’90s, right after I graduated high school, there was a song that was popular by The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls. You may remember it if you’re a fan of rap. It was called Mo Money Mo Problems. I don’t believe that. I don’t believe if you make more money, you’re going to have more problems, but I also do not see money as the panacea that most people see it as.
What I find when I am doing my group business acceleration with entrepreneurs and small businesses that are either getting started or they’re trying to get to that next inflection point is usually, these folks are either already at 6 figures trying to get to 7 figures or 7 figures trying to get to 8. They always have this idea that if they get to this certain revenue point, if they make this certain amount of money in their take-home pay, they are going to have these certain things.
I do this so often, so I know that that’s not always true. What I like to ask them is not why do you want it. If you’ve ever noticed, when we ask ourselves or ask someone else, “Why do you want this?” that almost puts us on the defensive. We feel like we have to defend why we want the thing that we want and give the list of all the reasons that we can come up with versus thinking about for ourselves, what do you think you will have to do and be when you reach that amount of money?
When you ask yourself the question that way, a couple of things happen. First of all, you start to understand what it is you are after. Maybe you think it’s time for freedom. Maybe you think it’s a better vacation. Maybe you think it’s something else, but the moment you know what that desire truly is that you think money is the answer to, but now you know money is only a vehicle, you might be able to get those things earlier than when you hit those big money goals.
The second thing is that you may not want that big-money goal at all. You may think that it’s going to bring you something that it’s not going to bring you. That’s not to say that you don’t want to have a great amount of money and you don’t want to be able to do the things you want to do and be financially free, but sometimes people get so set on a certain goal that they don’t think about what will happen with it.
I’ll give you an example. I was talking to an entrepreneur who had a business for quite some time. She was already at seven figures and doing very well. She wanted to get to 5 million in revenue, and I wanted to ask the question, “What will be different when you have $5 million in revenue?” She said to me, “I think that’s the next step. That’s where I need to go.”
You’ve heard me talk about limiting beliefs before. That’s a limiting belief. “That’s where I need to go.” My follow-up questions were, “Do you know why you think you need to go there? What will you have, do and be when you have $5 million in revenue?” When she started asking herself those questions, she started questioning going to $5 million in revenue because she knew it meant she’d be scaling her company.
She knew it would mean hiring more people, managing more clients, more work for her, and maybe more money, but maybe not that much more money. She started to open her eyes to the fact that she could probably get more money than she wanted in her lifestyle in an easier way. Another example is someone who told me if they made $100,000 a year, they would be happy.
What do you think you would have, do, or be if you had $100,000 a year? What it turned out as he was answering me was that he would have more time. It wasn’t the money. It was what the money would allow him to pay for instead of doing it himself and that would give him more time. Now, with a few changes over a couple of weeks, he’s living the life that he thought making $100,000 a year would bring him and that’s wonderful because he’s happier.
When he gets to $100,000, he might be even happier because he’s already done the things to get what he wants. That’s the important takeaway here. Getting the money rarely is going to bring you what it is that you want. If you figure out what you want, you can get those things much faster. Also, the exciting part is not only will you be happier because you have the things that you thought that money would bring you, but also you’re going to get to that money more quickly because you’re not going to be focused on how you don’t have these things. You’re going to be grateful for them.
Once you get to a place of gratitude, achieving your goals becomes so much easier and so much faster. It’s super easy for me to say here, giving you these couple of examples.
