The Secret To Enjoying The Future NOW
I am so glad you’re here. I’ve been talking with a lot of impatient people this weekend. Me, I’m impatient. No, real people. Also, I am always impatient. One of the things that comes up with absolutely everyone is how am I ever going to wait for this thing to get here, for this to happen, this job, this person, this amount of money, this experience, whatever it is. How am I ever going to get there?
The Power Of Acting As If
The question that I ask people is, what would you do if you knew for certain that everything you wanted, this thing you want most in the world, was absolutely coming? Let’s say you’d have it in six weeks. How would you act? What would you do with these six weeks? Let me give you a few examples from real life because you’ll see there is an opportunity to enjoy where you are now while being completely confident that you’re going to get the thing that you want. It’ll make the time pass faster and you’re going to manifest that thing even more easily.
One example is I remember years ago working in corporate, I started a new role and it was so boring in the beginning. Have you ever done that? You start a new job and you expect that it’s going to be fast-paced and cool. Sometimes it is, but sometimes maybe it’s a new division, a new role that didn’t exist and it takes a while for it to ramp up and it’s boring.
You have the opportunity to fully enjoy where you are now while confidently knowing you'll get what you want. This will make time pass faster and help you manifest it more easily. Share on XWhen I was in that moment and wishing I was super busy, someone very kindly said to me, “There’s going to come a time when you don’t even feel like you can take lunch. Enjoy now this time that you have and assume it’s going to get super busy.” What would you do right now knowing that you’re going to be super busy for the rest of the year?”
Another example, I wanted to go to Germany when I was stationed in Korea. Korea was okay, but it was a smaller base. You couldn’t go to as many places. There were a lot of limiting factors because it was a fighter base and Korea seemed like it was nowhere near as cool as Germany was going to be. Here’s what’s funny. When I got about two months out from when I knew I was going to Germany, I started to enjoy Korea in such a different way because I knew I was going to Germany soon.
There were things I liked about Korea that I wanted to make sure I fit in. I waited until the eight-week point, so I didn’t get in everything I wanted to. I got most of it. I remember thinking, “What if I had done this entire one-year tour knowing I was going to go to Germany?” I did, but I was worried that it wouldn’t happen. If I knew, how would I have done this differently? How would I have enjoyed this more?
The last one. I worked with a client who wanted to work at Spotify. It was one of her dream jobs that was on that list. She was going through the hiring process. She was interviewing with many different companies and had not even gotten the interview at Spotify yet that she was hoping for. I told her to start acting like she already got the job and that she’d be starting in six weeks. What are the things you would do?
The secret to enjoying the future you want now is to act as if it will arrive in six weeks. You don’t need to know how—it will unfold. Just start enjoying life now. Share on XShe’s like, “I’ve been on a sabbatical because I’ve had a great career so far and I took some time off to spend with family and friends and my girlfriend. I would do this, and this.” I said, “Start doing those things.” Lo and behold, when she started acting like in six weeks, she was going to have that job at Spotify, she didn’t get it in six weeks. She got it in about 8 to 10 weeks. She got the interview. She enjoyed the process. It was just a different experience.
Enjoying The Present While Anticipating The Future
The secret to enjoying the future that you want right now is acting as if it’s going to be here in six weeks. You don’t have to know the how of it. You don’t have to know the details. Start enjoying your life now. What are the things you would do? If you’re looking to have a baby and you can’t wait like, “Why can’t I get pregnant?” I’m going to tell you right now, there’s going to be a lot of time after that baby gets here that you wish you had time to yourself or you could run and go to the store without packing a diaper bag and getting everything ready or stay up late at night because you know that you can sleep in in the morning.
Do those things. If you’re looking for this high-powered leadership job and you can’t wait until you get there, know that when you’re in that role, you’re going to be responsible for everyone and not just you. What would you do if you knew this was your last year of only being responsible for you? What fun things would you do at work? What would you participate in that you might not be able to participate in then? What kind of longer lunch would you take? Whatever those things are, find the things about now that you can enjoy and the future that you’re looking forward to that you want to be here so badly will get here that much more quickly. Here’s to your success.
