In today’s episode of the Winning Mindset Mastery Podcast, April shares an interesting observation. She recently had the opportunity to fly in a private plane. Not only to fly as a passenger, but to actually take the wheel and steer it. Here’s what she noticed. Much like her experience driving a racecar, wherever she focused, wherever she looked, that’s the direction in which she steered the plane. As you might guess, April’s flying experience has a LOT to do with our mindset training. In today’s episode, she asks some really important questions. Your answers will tell a lot about where your mindset is and where it’s heading. And where it’s heading, is where YOU are heading! She tells us an amazing benefit of training ourselves to focus on the things we want. Then she tells us the best way to do that! This episode of the Winning Mindset Mastery Podcast promises to be one you don’t want to miss!

The Game Changing Secret Pilots And Race Car Drivers Use To Get What They Want
Thank you for joining me. I was traveling to San Antonio, and I met up with my former commander from when I was in the Air Force and a friend of his, and we went flying in a Cessna 177. I’m not sure if you are familiar with flying or not. I have been up a couple of times, but I have never done any of the flying. If you have seen my driving, maybe I should or maybe I shouldn’t.
In this particular instance, I got to fly for a few of the minutes that we were up there. I found that it was interesting that, much like driving wherever I was focused or looking, I would inadvertently steer the plane. We talk about this a lot in mindset. You get what you focus on. If you are not familiar with what I mean by the cars in race car driving, you are trying to get around the track as quickly as possible.
You get what you focus on. Share on XPossibly, even more importantly, you are just trying not to crash into anyone or the wall because you might not be the fastest person for the entire race. If you don’t crash into the wall or another person, you may still win because someone else did. As you are learning to drive, if you have ever been on a racetrack, and I have, one of the things that they tell you is not even to look at the wall, not even to look at the other drivers, to focus on where you want the car to go. The reason is that when you are going at extremely high speeds, the small movements of your hands on the wheel will move the car a lot further than you would think. Where your eyes go, your hands go, the car goes. You always want to focus on exactly where you want it to be.
I have always found this a great analogy for mindset because we too, need to focus on where we want to be and where we want to go. I want you to take a moment and ask yourself this question. No one’s there with you, so you can be honest. What are you focusing on most days? Please take a moment and think about it. Are you perhaps focusing on the things that are going on in the world that upset you? Are you focusing on the fact that someone else is further along in their career than you are? Are you focused on something someone else has that you want? The reason I ask you this is that if we get what we focus on, we have got to learn to train our focus to the things that we want instead of the things that might emotionally rile us, bother us, and then take our focus.
The great thing is, the more that you do this, the more pathways you build in your brain, the more your neurons are firing and stronger and are more easily accessed. The easier it will be for you to focus on the things that you want to do. For a lot of us, we are focusing on things by default, and that’s why I asked you those questions. You may think you are focusing on the things that you want, but you may be spending more time focusing on things that you don’t want. The next question is, what do you want to focus on? If you were focusing on the things that mattered most, the things that you want to have results in your life, what then would you be focusing on? Would you be focusing on relationships with your family, your work, or on your health?
If you could pick 1 to 3 things in your life to focus on, what would those things be? Then the next step is, how do you know you are focusing on them? What are you doing? The best way that you can focus on things that you want in your life is with your time. There are a variety of ways that you can do this. The first one that I would recommend is to find which of those things is the most important and commit to yourself. Whether it is on your calendar or in writing, the amount of time and the consistency that you plan to spend on that thing that you are focusing on. No matter how often it is, no matter how big or small of an amount of time. Being intentional about the fact that you are focusing on it will not only improve how you show up for yourself, but it will improve how quickly you get results.
You are going to be leveraging your mind, leveraging your habits, leveraging the good way that you feel about doing something consistently when you start to focus on these things. Your activity is to ask yourself, what those things are that are important to you. Then ask yourself that follow-up question about where you are spending your time, where you are focusing your thoughts, and where you are spending the most of your effort.
If it’s in line with those things, that’s fantastic. If it isn’t, just making small or almost imperceptible changes in that focus, in that time, or that commitment will make a huge difference. If you find that you are not focusing on them, that doesn’t mean that you have to do it five days a week for an hour and a half a day. You could set an at least goal.
“I want to spend time working on this at least 2 or 3 times a week.” The reason I’m such a big fan of an at least goal is that when you are starting something new. Sometimes you want to go all in and do it every single day for such and such amount of time. It’s just not feasible. It’s not going to get you to be consistent because you are going to be hard on yourself if you miss a day or if you can’t do that full-time. Setting those at least goals sets you up for success. You will find those small successes turn into bigger successes and allow you the ability and the desire to focus more time.
Try this out, find out what you are focusing on. Find out if you are focusing on the things that matter the most to you and commit to how you are going to focus on them going forward with these at least goals. If you want to share with me, let me know how this is going.
