A Personal Message From April On Being Your Authentic Self
Being Your Authentic Self
I’m so glad you’re here. This episode is a little more personal than normal. Let’s be serious. You and I are personal all the time. We’re talking about our mindset, our goals, our lives, and what we’re going to do. Now, I’m going to share something that I’m going to be changing going forward in the show because I want to be more authentic to who I am. It’s a journey because being your authentic self is the greatest gift, the most fun, and the most exciting. It’s also the most scary sometimes.
In a lot of areas, I find it very easy. I find being super authentic in my business is great because of the people that I can help run towards me. The people that I wouldn’t be able to help as much or who wouldn’t be a good fit to work with me, run away. In some areas, I can still be challenged to embrace 100% who I am. All of us are this way. A lot of it is based on maybe how I grew up or something that happened at some point in the past that gave me a limiting belief about something.
This one may seem small and simple but, to me, it was a big thing. It took a while for me to make the decision to move forward with this. Candidly, a lot of prompting. Growing up as a kid, I used to be incredibly embarrassed by a lot of members of my family. I was embarrassed by them because of a lot of drama. The words like White trash are used about my family by people. They weren’t always wrong, depending on who they were talking about.
My family was always cursing up a storm, especially my mother. To the point that I can remember as a young child like 6 years old or, 7 years old, or 8 years old, begging her not to cuss at my teachers when she came to PTA meetings. I always associated cussing or cursing, however, you want to call it, with those trashier sides of who people saw us as in our family.
For me, I always wanted to avoid looking like that. I wanted to have a better life than we had. I thought that if I presented myself in a certain way, people would believe that I belonged. That started from a young age. I did that for many years in the way I dressed, in the way I presented myself, anything and everything. Interestingly, even though I was so embarrassed about mom and the way that she spoke. Once I joined the Air Force and got around a bunch of military folks for a while, I found out that saying some of those words was the best way for me to get my point across in a lot of areas.
It was interesting because I was a broadcaster. That means, whenever you’re anywhere near a microphone, you assume that mic is hot and you don’t ever say a word that you don’t want recorded or broadcasted to the entire world. It was my habit to never use those words when I was broadcasting and to never use them in interviews. If you know me or you’ve worked with me, you know that I use all those words for emphasis when I’m looking to make a point.
I’ve struggled with the idea of speaking that way on the show because I worried, “What if folks have their kids reading? What if I offend someone?” These messages about how to make your life better don’t reach them because I’m dropping an F-bomb here and there. Ultimately, what I realized is this, for those of you who are benefiting from the show and getting out of this. What I want for you in your life is going to feel my intent.
You’re going to know regardless of the words that I use and the way that I say them that they’re coming from a place of love because you will feel my intent and my desire for you to have the best, the brightest, and most amazing life you can possibly have. This episode serves two purposes. One is to warn you that we’re going to be changing the rating on the show going forward to explicit.
Step into the person that you truly are. That person is 100% you. Share on XTwo. to encourage you to look at your own life and see if there are areas where you are not fully being yourself, where you would feel better if you were because it would make a difference to you and it would help you step into the person that you are. That person is 100% you. One of a kind. Maybe like me, a little bit of a weirdo but the only you there is, and doing that can be incredible and so rewarding even if it’s fucking scary. I told you I’d do it sometimes for emphasis. Here’s to your success.
