A Witty Comeback Helps Your Mindset
Guarding Your Mindset
Have you ever been in that moment where you had some interaction with someone, and you didn’t say the thing that you really wish you’d said that would just nail it in the moment? I’m here to tell you that actually having a comeback or returning their energy is a huge benefit to you and your mindset, but not in the way you might be thinking.
Sometimes, in addition to working on our mindset, we also need to guard our mindset, meaning we don’t allow in things that don’t align with who we are, what we’re working on, and what we want our mindset to be. Some of the things I do in order to support this are a little weird, but they work. Things like not watching the news, not staying in conversations with people who are hell-bent on being a victim or talking badly about other people. I’ll give it a reframe or two, but if it continues, I’m out.
The last thing that I do is what I was just talking about, returning energy to people so it’s not still with me when it is not energy that’s aligned with the mindset that I want, the life that I have, those sorts of things. Here’s what I mean. We all have energy. That’s our vibe, which is just another way of saying vibration. That’s the energy that we give out to people. When someone walks into a room who has amazing energy, we can feel it. They light up the room. That is their vibration.
It’s a combination of our attitude, how we feel about ourselves, and the intent that we have that’s behind our words. Let me just tell you, Southern women are better at this than anyone. They can say things that, on the surface, like if you read it in a text, might sound like it was nice, but the undertone and the intent make it not nice at all.
Returning Energy
Let me give an example of this energy. “That’s a beautiful dress.” Yeah, they don’t mean that. If they said, “That’s a beautiful dress,” totally different energy. How do you return the energy when it is someone who is doing it the first way? Why would you even care? Here’s why. It’s because if someone is being disrespectful and sending energy your way that doesn’t align with you or your mindset, you’ll hold onto that if you don’t push it back at them, which I have practiced and done over the years.
If someone is being disrespectful and sending energy your way that doesn't align with you, you'll hold onto that if you don't push it back at them. Share on XI’ve had several folks that I work with ask me, “Please talk to people about how you return energy.” A lot of times, we think of it as a witty comeback, but really, what you’re doing is just pushing energy that you don’t want back at the person who sent it to you. Let me give you an example, let’s say someone is being disrespectful to a friend of mine, no, to me, not to the friend. They say something that makes me feel uncomfortable. I’ll return their energy by calling them out on it and pushing it back at them.
Here’s an example. I remember talking to someone who, I think, probably had some insecurities about how someone that I knew, who was far younger, was really good in business. He said something along the lines of, “Do you still know that boy with the little electrician shop?” I said, “I’m sorry?” He said, “The boy with the little electrician shop, do you still know him?” I said, “I know a man who has three locations in a business that does electrical work, who then sold it for high seven figures. I actually think he’s the same age as your wife.” That’s returning the energy.
It is calling them out on what they did in a kind way. You don’t have to call them out as in, “Why did you say that,” or “Why are you doing that?” You just push it back. I corrected what he said. I said what was true and pushed it right back at him. In most cases, most people who don’t really have ill intent, and maybe don’t even realize the subtext of what they’re saying, because it’s about them, their own insecurities, their own issues, they’re going to immediately apologize. They’re probably going to over-explain how they didn’t mean what you thought they meant. Don’t worry about that. Accept their apology and move on.
Returning the energy is about calling someone out for what they did in a kind way. Share on XThe Responsibility To Push Back Energy
Know that not only do you have the right to push someone’s energy back at them when they say something that’s snarky, feels low vibration or feels like something you don’t want to deal with, you have the responsibility to do it for yourself because that keeps all of the area around you high vibe, the way that you want it to be, and aligned with that winning mindset that you’re developing so that you can focus on all the things that you want.
Sometimes, when we don’t push that energy back, we will focus on that comment for the rest of the day or week. We don’t want to do that. Just push it right back where it belongs, with that person. Either you’ll have a resolution right then, or even if they don’t say anything, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you didn’t sit with it. This applies whether the comment they say is directed towards you or someone you care about.
Give this a try. I would love to hear how it worked for you. If you’re one of those folks who’s like, “I should have pushed the energy back. I didn’t.
